For years, Arsenal swept all before them in England, while donning a Dunce's cap as soon as they left the white cliffs of Dover. Now, after the stunning performance in Madrid brought their fourth Champions League away victory of the season, one more than in the Premier League, the reverse seems to be true.
In the bowels of the Bernabeu on Tuesday night, Robert Pires admitted: "There are two faces to Arsenal this season. There's a difference between the Arsenal team in the Champions League and in the Premiership.
"The game in England and Europe are two different things, but we must try to transfer some of these qualities to the league, find some equilibrium. We've been learning in Europe over the past four or five years. Arsene [Wenger] has a project. He believes in it and we believe in it." England captain David Beckham admitted that he and his Real Madrid team-mates were stunned by the result, saying: "I think it's going to be tough for us now to win anything this season. The only good thing was that I didn't get a yellow card, which means I'll have the chance to help to put things right in London." Just proves that he can avoid a yellow when he needs to.
