The second half opens with Nedved’s great action: he serves Del Piero at the edge of the penalty area, gets past, shoots and hits the far post, narrowly too high. After 6 minutes, another inviting occasion: Camoranesi shoots well a free kick from the right but nor Emerson or Ibrahimovic can turn the ball in.
Messina push forward and Nanni gets past Cannavaro at the edge of the box, the defender brings him down and earns a second yellow card which sends him off. Capello replaces Del Piero with Thuram and the Sicilians try to take advantage of the numerical superiority immediately: Nanni and Floccari arrange a good action and the latter finds himself face to face with Buffon but he overdribbles and allows the Bianconeri defenders to come back and recover. After 19 minutes, Mutu replaces Camoranesi; the Romanian is called into action straightaway by Ibrahimovic but he can’t deflect the Swede’s drive into goal by a whisker. After 26 minutes, Bondi turns up, driving down the left flank and makes an inch-perfect pass to Nanni, however the striker’s header is off target. A little later, it’s again Mutu who aims at goal with a half volley shot but Caglioni saves it. After 29 minutes, Nedved aims at goal with a left-footed drive but he shoots it too high and after 32 minutes, following Pessotto’s ball falling aslant, he sends his header out.
Juventus look insistently for the winning goal and can finally find it thanks to a penalty: on 35’ minutes, Ibrahimovic gets past Rafael in the penalty area but he’s brought down and referee Farina points towards the penalty spot; Mutu gets in charge of converting it and doesn’t miss the goal (1-2). Five minutes later, however, Messina earn the draw: Cristante plays a free kick and Floccari scores his brace. The last attack takes place on 46’ minutes: Nedved shoots a powerful left-footed drive but Caglioni clears the last chance of the match. It ends 2-2.
